Friend Verification: What to Do When WeChat Asks for a Second Person

Updated 2026 · 8 min read

If you've just finished the sign-up form and WeChat still won't let you into the app, you've hit the step that confuses almost every new user: friend verification. WeChat is asking another existing user to confirm that you're a real person. There is no way to skip it from your side — but there is a right way to get through it, and a few ways people accidentally make it worse.

This guide explains what the screen is actually asking for, who is allowed to help, what to do when you don't know a single person on WeChat, and how to recover when a verification attempt fails. For the sign-up steps that come before this, see our registration guide.

Why WeChat does this at all

WeChat has a persistent problem with automated and bulk account creation. Requiring a second, already-established user to vouch for a brand-new account is their main defence: a spam operation would need thousands of genuine long-standing accounts to create thousands of fakes. For ordinary users, the cost is one extra step. For bulk abusers, it's a wall.

Two things follow from this that are worth internalising:

Who is allowed to verify you

Not every WeChat user can act as your verifier. WeChat applies its own eligibility rules to the person helping you, and these are the requirements that catch people out. The person scanning your code generally needs to be an account that:

WeChat adjusts these thresholds over time and they can differ by region, so treat the list above as the general shape of the rules rather than a fixed specification. If your helper meets all of it and it still fails, the reason is usually quota or account standing rather than anything you did.

The step-by-step

  1. 1Complete the phone number and SMS code steps in the app. WeChat will then show you a verification screen.
  2. 2Choose the option to have a friend help you verify. WeChat generates a QR code (and usually an alternative code your helper can type in) tied to your pending account.
  3. 3Get that QR code in front of your helper. In practice this means showing your screen to someone physically next to you, sending them a screenshot, or — most commonly for a remote helper — sharing the screen over a call.
  4. 4Your helper opens WeChat, goes to Me > Settings > General > WeChat Security Center (the exact path varies by version, and is sometimes surfaced as a "Help Friend Register" / "Assist Verification" entry), then scans the code or enters it manually.
  5. 5They confirm the request from their side. Your app should then unlock.

Timing matters more than people expect

The QR code is time-limited. If it expires while your helper is finding the right menu, the attempt fails and you generate a fresh one — which, if you do it repeatedly, starts to look like exactly the automated behaviour WeChat is screening for. So get your helper ready before you generate the code: app open, on the right screen, ready to scan within a minute or two.

What if you don't know anyone on WeChat?

This is the real wall, and it's a circular one: you need an account to make WeChat contacts, and WeChat wants you to have contacts before giving you an account. Your realistic options, in order of preference:

Avoid "instant verification" sellers on forums and messaging apps. They typically verify you using farmed or stolen accounts, and WeChat's response is to ban both accounts when the pattern is detected — often days later, after you've already started using the account and possibly linked a payment card. A brand new account has no history to appeal with, so the ban is usually permanent.

Why verification attempts fail

If your helper scanned the code and it still didn't work, the cause is nearly always one of these:

If you've triggered a cooldown

The correct response is counter-intuitive: do nothing for 24 hours. Don't reinstall the app, don't generate new codes, don't create a second account with another number — all of these reinforce the pattern that got you flagged. Come back the next day with an eligible helper ready to scan immediately, and do it once, cleanly.

After you're verified: don't waste it

A newly verified account is on probation whether it tells you so or not. For the first couple of weeks, keep your behaviour unremarkable: add a small number of contacts rather than dozens, avoid messaging strangers in bulk, set a proper profile photo and display name, and don't immediately start sending identical messages to many people. Accounts get restricted for behaviour that looks automated, not for the act of being new.

It's also worth doing the security setup in the first sitting — a passcode lock and a recovery email take two minutes and save a lot of pain later. We cover that in keeping your WeChat account safe. Once you're through verification and set up, the natural next step is linking a payment method.
