These are the problems that come up most often for people setting up WeChat from outside China. Each answer explains what's actually happening, because most of these aren't bugs — they're WeChat's risk controls doing exactly what they're designed to do, and knowing that changes what you should do about it.
I never received the SMS verification code
The code is sent by WeChat but delivered by your carrier, and international application-to-person SMS is the weakest link in the chain. Work through this in order:
- Wait and retry once. Delivery can take several minutes, and requesting repeatedly can invalidate earlier codes.
- Check your SMS inbox for a blocked/filtered folder. Many carriers and phones classify application SMS as spam by default.
- Confirm the country code. A missing or wrong country code is the single most common cause — the number is accepted, but the code goes nowhere.
- Try the voice-call option. WeChat usually offers "receive code by voice call" after a failed SMS attempt, and it frequently works when SMS doesn't.
- Check your carrier blocks application SMS. Some prepaid and corporate plans disable it. Ask support directly: "are A2P/international application SMS blocked on my number?"
- Try another number. If nothing works, use a different carrier. This is not a WeChat preference issue — it's delivery.
If you see a message about too many attempts or being rate-limited, stop for 24 hours. That counter is per number, and continued attempts extend it.
I don't see the Services (Wallet) tab
The Services entry under Me doesn't appear until your account is sufficiently verified. If it's missing, the usual causes are:
- Your account is still pending friend verification — finish that first (see friend verification).
- Your account is newly registered and still inside an initial trust period. It normally appears on its own within days of normal use.
- You're on an older app version where the layout differs — update WeChat from the official store.
- Your account was flagged at registration. If the tab hasn't appeared after a couple of weeks of ordinary use, see the appeals section in account safety.
Friend verification keeps failing
This is the most common blocker, and it's nearly always about your helper, not you. Their account needs to be established, have a bank card linked, be in good standing, and have verification quota left — most people can only assist roughly once a month. If your helper has recently verified someone else, they simply can't verify you until the quota resets.
The other frequent cause is an expired QR code: the code is time-limited, so have your helper already sitting in the right WeChat menu before you generate it. Full walkthrough in friend verification.
WeChat says my phone number is already registered
This means an account already exists against that number — possibly one you created years ago and forgot, or one created by whoever had the number before you (common with recycled SIM cards). Your options:
- Try to recover it. On the login screen use Can't log in? and follow the recovery flow. If it's genuinely your old account, this is by far the best outcome — an established account has none of a new account's restrictions.
- If it isn't yours, you generally can't take it over. Register with a different number.
- Recycled numbers are trouble. If the previous owner's account is still tied to the number, expect verification and recovery to behave unpredictably. A clean, long-held number is worth a lot here.
I changed my phone number and now I'm locked out
This is one of the worst situations to be in, and it's almost always preventable. If you still have access to the account on a logged-in device, change the number inside WeChat immediately (Me > Settings > Account Security > Phone > Change Number) — you can complete this even after the old SIM is dead, as long as a device is still logged in.
If you have no logged-in device and no access to the old number, you're into formal account recovery: the Can't log in? flow, your linked recovery email if you set one, and possibly a friend-assisted verification. Success is not guaranteed. This is exactly why linking a recovery email on day one matters.
I forgot my password
Use Can't log in? > Forgot password on the login screen to reset via SMS. Note that your payment password is a separate six-digit code — reset that inside Services > Wallet > Payment Password. The two are often confused; forgetting one doesn't affect the other.
I can't add someone, or they can't add me
- "User does not exist." Search is exact-match on WeChat ID. A single wrong character fails silently — confirm the ID by having them read it off their own profile screen.
- You can't be found at all. Check Settings > Privacy: adding by WeChat ID, phone number, and QR code are three separate toggles.
- Your request is ignored. There's no notification when a request is declined or left unread. Send a message with real context rather than a bare "Hi".
- Large groups. Joining bigger groups can require a linked bank card as an anti-spam measure.
The app is in Chinese and I can't read it
Set the interface language under Me > Settings > General > Language. For content, long-press any chat message and choose Translate — this covers messages and many Official Account articles, and it's the feature that makes WeChat usable before your Chinese is up to it.
